University teachers fight for fair pay

The Federation of the University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) called a press conference in a bid to take initiatives regarding their low salary levels. However, due to security restrictions the media was not allowed to enter the university premises where the conference was being held and the group spoke to the media from across a wire fence.

The group alleged that the government did not address the issues of underpayment but provided an allowance of 25% for research and development. The Association suggested that  6% of the country’s GDP should be allocated towards education in Sri Lanka.
